Introducing the Michele Chiarlo Barolo Tortoniano DOCG 2019, a distinguished expression of the Nebbiolo grape from the esteemed Barolo region in Piedmont, Italy. This vintage exemplifies Michele Chiarlo's commitment to crafting wines that embody both tradition and elegance.

Winery Background

Founded in 1956, Michele Chiarlo is a family-owned winery renowned for producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of Piedmont. The "Tortoniano" Barolo derives its name from the Tortonian geological era, highlighting the calcareous-clay soils rich in magnesium and manganese that impart distinct characteristics to the wine.

Grape Composition and Terroir

  • Varietal: 100% Nebbiolo
  • Vineyard Location: Southwest-facing slopes at altitudes between 240 and 360 meters above sea level.
  • Soil: Calcareous clay marl from the Tortonian period, contributing to the wine's elegance and complex aromatics.

Vinification Process

  1. Harvesting: Manual selection of grapes during mid-October to ensure optimal ripeness.
  2. Fermentation: Traditional fermentation in oak vats with a maceration period of 15 days at controlled temperatures.
  3. Aging: The wine matures for a minimum of two years in large oak casks, followed by refinement in the bottle before release.

Food Pairing

This Barolo pairs exquisitely with:

  • Mushroom pasta: The wine's earthy notes complement the umami flavours of mushroom-based dishes.
  • Fowl: Enhances the delicate flavours of roasted or grilled poultry.
  • Matured cheeses: Balances the richness of aged cheeses, providing a harmonious tasting experience.

Serving Recommendations

  • Temperature: Serve at 18-20°C (64-68°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity.
  • Decanting: Recommended to decant for at least one hour before serving to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full character.
  • Cellaring Potential: This vintage is enjoyable now but will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 8-10 years, rewarding those who choose to cellar it.
