Stephen Chambers RA, The Court of Redonda is a group of 101 paintings first exhibited at Ca’ Dandolo as part the Venice Biennale, 2017.

The paintings originate from a conversation between Stephen Chambers RA and the acclaimed Spanish writer, Javier Marias (1951-2022) whose novels Stephen had begun reading whilst working in New York in 2014.
Stephen Chambers’ paintings are imagined portraits of the non regal. Beekeepers, postman, gardeners, and the homeless are empowered. It is a visual response to Marias’ question of who could (should) be making decisions.

The paintings were made for two specific venues. Firstly Venice, and secondly the University of Cambridge. One in a 15th century palazzo, the second a 21st century purpose built art gallery (Downing College). Both Venice and Cambridge have a history of halls lined with portraits of those wielding power; the Doges and the Masters.

The original Court of Redonda installation is being sold in groups of 10 paintings each. Most of these sets are now placed in art collections in the United States. A few remaining sets are still available through Stephen Chambers Studio Ltd. Please contact them directly with enquiries
