H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, with roots tracing back to the 1840s. Herman Upmann, originally a banker, quit his job in the early 1840s and established a branch office in Havana. Recognising the potential of the cigar industry, Upmann made a bold investment in 1844 by founding a cigar factory and launching the H. Upmann brand.
In 1922, financial difficulties led both the Upmann bank and the cigar business to bankruptcy. They were subsequently acquired by J. Frankau & Co., a British firm that maintained the cigar production until 1935. The brand then changed hands again to Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the iconic Montecristo cigars. This company continued producing H. Upmann cigars until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry following the Cuban revolution. Despite these changes, H. Upmann cigars have remained a symbol of quality and tradition in the cigar world.
