Sauzal Vineyard The Ploughmen 2019

The Sauzal Vineyard The Ploughmen 2019 is a characterful Chilean red from the Empedrado subregion of the Valle de Maule, produced by Garage Wine Company from an extraordinary old vineyard in Chile’s Coastal Range.

The fruit comes from the ancient Sauzal Vineyard, a two-hectare parcel of low-yielding bush vines growing in silty, sandy granitic soils. The vines are carefully farmed by hand and horse, combining traditional methods passed down through generations with regenerative farming techniques.

The 2019 blend comprises 58% Garnacha, 38% Cariñena and 4% Monastrell. Fermentation takes place naturally in open-top fermenters using native yeasts, with manual punch-downs and pressing. A small proportion is vinified as whole bunches, while maturation takes place in third-use barrels and larger foudres over two winters.

Aromatically, the wine offers blueberries, violets and orange peel, joined by raspberry leaf, aniseed and fresh aromatic herbs. The palate is vibrant and energetic, combining lively acidity with ultra-fine tannins and impressive length.
