H. Upmann is one of the oldest and most distinguished cigar brands, with origins tracing back to the 1840s. The story begins with Herman Upmann, a banker who, in the early 1840s, ventured into the heart of Havana. Recognizing the potential for a thriving business, he made the bold move to invest in a cigar factory in 1844, officially launching the H. Upmann brand.
Despite initial success, both the Upmann bank and cigar business faced bankruptcy in 1922. The company was then acquired by J. Frankau & Co., a British firm that continued production until 1935. At that point, the brand was sold to Menendez y Garcia Co., the creators of the renowned Montecristo cigars. They maintained the production of H. Upmann cigars until the nationalisation of the Cuban tobacco industry following the revolution.
H. Upmann cigars are known for their exquisite blend, composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos from the prestigious Vuelta Abajo region. Every H. Upmann cigar is crafted using the ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ technique, meaning long filler, totally handmade, ensuring superior quality and craftsmanship.
The brand's commitment to excellence is evidenced by the gold medals it has won at eleven international exhibitions during the 19th century, proudly displayed on its labeled boxes.
