H. Upmann Coronas Major Tubed Cigar
H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands, dating back to the 1840s. It was founded when Herman Upmann left his job as a banker in the early 1840s and opened a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised he could start a commercial venture in the industry and, in 1844, he boldly invested in a cigar factory, officially launching the H. Upmann brand. In 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt, and they had to sell to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm that continued cigar production until 1935, when the brand was sold again to the newly established Menendez y Garcia Co., makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued producing H. Upmann cigars until the tobacco industry's nationalisation after the Cuban revolution.
H. Upmann's blend comprises exclusively filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone. The brand's labelled boxes feature gold medals from no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century.
A small cigar, but with impressive, spicy flavours. An ideal candidate for a smoke on the go thanks to the tube.
H. Upmann was the first brand in the world to introduce the cedar-lined aluminium tubes for cigars. The Coronas Major was not the first size to be tubed, but it has been on the UK market since 1937 and is loved by many smokers.
