One of the oldest and most revered cigar brands, H. Upmann, traces its roots back to the 1840s. Founded by Herman Upmann, who left his banking career to open a branch office in Havana, this brand quickly established itself as a cornerstone of the cigar industry. In 1844, Upmann made the audacious move to invest in a cigar factory, officially launching the H. Upmann brand.

Despite its early success, the Upmann bank and cigar business faced bankruptcy in 1922, leading to a sale to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm that maintained production until 1935. The brand then found new life under Menendez y Garcia Co., the creators of the iconic Montecristo cigars. They continued producing H. Upmann cigars until the Cuban tobacco industry was nationalised following the revolution.

The distinctive H. Upmann blend features exclusively filler and binder tobaccos from the famed Vuelta Abajo region, with each cigar crafted using the ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ (long filler, totally handmade) method. This commitment to quality is reflected in the brand's decorated history, with gold medals from no less than eleven international exhibitions in the 19th century proudly displayed on its labeled boxes.
