Pol Roger Champagne: Rebel Spotlights

17 July 2024

In this edition of #RGSpotlights, we focus on Pol Roger Champagne. This brand epitomises elegance and heritage while often simmering below the surface of mainstream recognition. Since 1894, Pol Roger has produced exceptional Champagne in Épernay, with the founder's descendants continuing the legacy today. Despite its relatively low production compared to other major Champagne Houses, Pol Roger earned a prestigious Royal Warrant as the purveyor of Champagne to the British Royal Family.

Unlike many major Champagne Houses, Pol Roger maintains a relatively low production, with only 110,000 cases across their range.
Pol Roger is one of the few Grande Marque Champagne houses that remains family-owned and operated. This historic house stands out not only for its exceptional Champagne. But also for its ownership of nearly 55% of the vineyards used in its production. A rare feat in a region dominated by large firms. This dedication to vineyard ownership and family tradition underscores Pol Roger's commitment to quality and heritage.

However, Pol Roger is perhaps better known as Winston Churchill's champagne of choice. With the House estimating he enjoyed close to 42,000 bottles over his extensive lifetime—averaging two bottles a day since his first Pol Roger invoice in 1908.

A decade later, Pol Roger honoured their distinguished patron by creating the Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill. A prestigious cuvee, crafted to match Churchill’s taste for robust, food-friendly vintage Champagnes. It has a closely guarded blend only privy to Pol Roger, which is produced only in exceptional vintages. The grapes are exclusively sourced from their Grand Cru vineyard, continuing to reflect Churchill’s appreciation for aged wines. Pol Roger released this cuvee later than their other vintages, ensuring each bottle embodies the depth and character that define the House’s esteemed Champagne.

Pol Roger aims to continuously show their craft and expertise in their champagnes. While the branding alone is stunning, their crafts bleeds right into the bottle. With their grapes and their process upholding their interest in making each sip an experience. The Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill Champagne is a sophisticated blend which exemplifies elegance and power. It boasts a mid-golden yellow hue and a continuous stream of delicate bubbles. Just as Churchhill loved, it presents a balanced profile with weight and power. A velvety texture made for sipping with a good meal.

Pol Roger’s Winston Churchill Champagne upholds its illustrious legacy with every bottling, crafted with the same dedication and meticulous attention to detail as when it was first introduced.

Each bottle is a testament to the enduring partnership between two extraordinary entities. Encapsulating a rich history that adds profound depth and significance. This commitment to excellence ensures that every sip continues to honour and celebrate the iconic Winston Churchill.
Pol Roger continues to shine as a beacon of heritage and craftsmanship in the world of Champagne. Their dedication to quality, reflected in every bottle, from the vineyards to the cellar, showcases a commitment to excellence that few can match.

As we conclude this edition of #RGSpotlights, we invite you to explore Pol Roger's exceptional offerings and experience the legacy that has captivated connoisseurs for over a century. Whether you're toasting a special occasion or simply indulging in the finer things, Pol Roger Champagne stands as a timeless symbol of elegance, tradition, and unparalleled craftsmanship. Cheers to the hidden gems and the stories that make them extraordinary.
