However, as Cuba fell under Communist control, the tobacco industry as a whole faced significant changes, this prompted Facundo’s son, Gilberto Oliva, to transition from growing to brokering tobacco.

By the early 1960s, mounting pressure forced Gilberto to search beyond Cuba for a place that could replicate its distinct tobacco flavour. His journeys led him through the regions of; Honduras, Panama, Mexico, and the Philippines. Before he finally found ideal conditions in Nicaragua. Today, the Oliva family has become one of Nicaragua’s largest growers of Cuban-seed tobacco, using a state-of-the-art production facility in Estelí. This has bolstered the reputation of Oliva Cigar Co. significantly.
