Craggy Range Syrah 2021 – Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand
Nestled in the famed Gimblett Gravels, where ancient river stones regulate heat and lend structure, Craggy Range's 2021 Syrah is a masterclass in terroir-driven precision. Crafted from a heritage Syrah clone brought to New Zealand some 150 years ago, this wine shows the richness and elegance for which the region is renowned.
On the nose, anticipate an expressive aromatic lift—lavender, violet florals, and fresh cherry rise to meet you, underpinned by spicy black pepper and a distinct minerality. The palate is silky yet intense, brimming with dark berry and bramble fruit, balanced by vivid acidity and fine-textured “Gimblett Dust” tannins that impart structure and poise. Aged for 15 months in French oak, including some new barrels, the oak is present but never domineering.
This wine offers immediate drinking pleasure but promises even more complexity with cellaring; it is expected to peak into the early 2030s. Pair with grilled lamb, venison, or richly spiced dishes to showcase its finesse.
