Glenfiddich 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 70cl, 40%
It’s hard being a whisky snob: in the end you often have to simply admit that some of the big-selling, popular drams are actually very good. In some cases, they are a good deal better than many of the more obscure names on the market. Case in point: the world’s beset-selling single malt provides a huge amount for any malt fan to enjoy.
Mouthwatering honeysuckle on the nose, with green pear, kiwi fruit and quite a lot of wood even at such a young age. The savoury note is difficult to pin down - shoe polish? wood varnish? limestone? - but it is what makes Glenfiddich stand apart from its sweeter, more simplistic Speyside competitors (not least the honeyed Glenlivet).
The palate offers big malty and oaky flavours, with a dry arrival that sweetens up into barley sugar, bananas, pears and baked apples…then a long and tingling finish, offering a touch of gingerbread to go with a very appealing spiciness (tequila, Jalapeno pepper).
There is a reason why Glenfiddich 12-year-old is the best-selling single malt Scotch whisky in the world: it quite simply deserves the accolade. No better place to begin your journey into appreciating whisky; but also a wonderful landmark for Scotch veterans to come back to again and again.
