The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old is a celebrated expression from the iconic Balvenie distillery. Crafted using a distinctive maturation process that involves two cask types, known as 'wood finishing'. Launched in 1993, this single malt whisky is the result of years of expertise from the late David C. Stewart, the Honorary Ambassador and Former Malt Master, who designed this unique maturation method in 1982.
First, the whisky is aged for many years in traditional whisky oak casks. This is where the spirit mellows and absorbs warm, vanilla like spiciness. Afterward, it is transferred to European Oak Sherry casks, allowing it to develop an increased complexity with fruity, honeyed depths, resulting in a perfectly balanced flavour profile.
On the nose, the Balvenie DoubleWood 12 offers a rich, inviting combination of gristy and nutty notes intertwined with a touch of spice. Honeyed sultanas and grapes further enhance the aroma. The palate is sweet, with a good body, where the bourbon characters evolve into gentle spice, subtle vanilla, and a quiet hint of balancing peat.
Dried fruits, combined with nuts, nutmeg, and cinnamon, bring the whisky full circle, delivering a harmonious flavour. The finish is spicy yet slightly drying, with lingering sweetness.
Whether you're a seasoned whisky connoisseur or a newcomer, this exceptional malt is a must try for anyone seeking a smooth, well-rounded dram.
